About

After a bit of a break, New England Railway Inc’ is back! However, we need your help. Located in Armidale, the New England Railway Inc’ is the proud owner of a number of historic former New South Wales Government Railways 620 type rail motors. Our intention is to operate these rail motors once restored from the Armidale Railway Station on all manner of journeys throughout the New England, Northern Tablelands and Upper Hunter regions. The Great Northern Railway, as it is known, is recognised as one of the most scenic railways in Australia and is the vision of our members to operate our trains along this railway line providing Armidale and surrounding regions with a new and unique tourist experience.

While the opportunity to take in some of Australia’s most beautiful scenery from the view of our restored 1950’s rail motors is only one of many experiences to enjoy along your journey you can also enjoy the many small villages and towns along the Great Northern Railway. Before we can do all this, however, we’re in need of some help. At present, we are in need volunteers from all walks of life to assist us in realising our vision and materials to assist us on our way. If you have an interest in railways, an interest in anything old, or just a desire to get out of the house and contribute to your community, then come and join us and become a member of New England Railway Inc.

If you can help, or would like to get involved, you can contact New England Railway Inc via our website, Facebook page or email us at admin@neri.org.au

New England Railway Inc (NERI) is not currently conducting Heritage rail operations as we are working towards gaining accreditation to do so.

Since the inception of the Rail Safety National Law (2012) has come into force we are required to apply in accordance with this act. We received our official Notice of Accreditation as a Rail heritage maintainer from the Independent Transport Safety Regulator some time ago pre-2000's. That allows us to carry out preservation and restoration of our railway infrastructure.

At the moment, it is not possible to give a reliable estimate of when we will be operating heritage rail services however in the meantime, all sorts of necessary work is going on at our depot in Armidale which is conveniently located on the corner of Niagara and Barney streets Armidale NSW to restore and preserve our railway heritage rollingstock. This work is driven by a dedicated team of young and old volunteers.

Through this web site, Our Facebook page and other social media we are endeavoring to keep members and the general public up to date with our latest activities.
